Malinda "Faye" Nelson, 78, passed away at 7:50 a.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at her residence.
She was born on May 28, 1931, in Ripley, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Clyde T. and Lovie E. (Smith) Williams. She married Harry L. Nelson, Jr. on December 22, 1946, in Hernando, Mississippi, and he preceded her in death in May of 1999.
Survivors include three daughters and sons in law: Barbara and Richard Farthing of Roxana, Nancy and Don Trask of East Alton, Lavern and Rick Geloff of Texas, two sons and daughters in law: Robert and Linda Nelson of Texas, Harry D. and Lorie Nelson of Bethalto, a god son: Carl "Bud" Horstmeyer of Georgia, nine grandchildren: Darin, Troy, Jason, Amy, Brady, Daryl, Nick, Stephanie, Erin, thirteen great grandchildren: Jake, Jamey, Taylor, Tyler, Austin, Bree, Kathryn, Ainsley, Brookelyn, Jacey, Jackson, Cadence, and Lana, one sister: Daisy Milam, two brothers: Marshall Williams and Clyde Williams.
After the death of her mother in 1940, she lived with foster parents Clarence and Wanda Craig. While separated from her siblings, she managed to remain in contact with the remaining eight brothers and sisters from Tennessee to Illinois. She met Harry, the love of her life and they were married for 52 years. She was a homemaker. She loved her family and her friends and she enjoyed spending time with them. They loved camping and vacationing with family and friends and the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rosewood Heights, where she served on many committees including the Deaconess Board, Finance Committee, and Pulpit Committee. She was a member of the choir and she actively participated in the work of God's Kids. She worked alongside her husband with the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Explorer Post, R.E.A.C.T., and the Circle Radio League. She was an active member of the Central School P.T.A.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents: Clarence and Wanda Craig, her husband, one granddaughter, four brothers: Wilmer, Ray, Alvin, Cecil, three sisters: Virginia Hopkins, Doris Tillman, and Patricia Kellett.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010, at the funeral home. Pastor Brian Crippen, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Rosewood Heights or BJC Hospice of Alton and will be accepted at the funeral home.
