Joseph J. Herndon, 84, died at 5:54 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born December 27, 1925 in Granite City, he was the son of Joseph W. and Ida Mae (Pruitt) Herndon.
He owned and operated Print Mart, Inc. in Granite City. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. On December 27, 1948 he married Charlotte Hellrung at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. She survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Jean Price and her husband Keith of St. Charles, MO, four sons; John Herndon and his wife Alison of Godfrey, Jeff Herndon and his wife Vickie of Lakeland, TN, Jay Herndon and his wife Karen of Alton, and Jerry Herndon and his wife Kathy of St. Charles, MO, 14 grandchildren; Tammy Schmidt, Joseph W. Herndon Jr., Jason Herndon, Sonja Graham, Julie Blankenship, Janna Pollock, Jay Herndon Jr., Benjamin Herndon, Aaron Herndon, Matthew Herndon, Kayla Herndon, Kristen Price, Jacob Price and Audrey Herndon, 18 great grandchildren and a sister, Maxine Davis and her husband Monroe of Granite City. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph W. Herndon Sr., four brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 noon Sunday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with Gary Chappel to officiate. Following the funeral service a reception will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
