John Wohnlich

John W. "Bill" Wohnlich, 84, died at 2:52 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at his home. Born August 31, 1925 in Alton, he was the son of John C. and Lydia (Cheeseman) Wohnlich.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the VFW Post 1308 and the Alton-Godfrey First Church of Christ Scientist. He retired from J.C. Wohnlich & Son, Inc. On November 7, 1953 in Alton, he married the former Jackie Brown. She survives.

Also surviving a son, Jay Wohnlich and his wife Lisa of Bel Air, Maryland, a daughter, Jan Bates and her husband Dennis of Alton four grandchildren; Eric Wohnlich of Silver Springs, Maryland, and Stephanie Wohnlich of Bel Air, Maryland, Jennifer Bates of Alton and Josh Bates of Alton and a sister, June Yungck of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will be private at Upper Alton Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
