Zelma Paynter

Zelma I. Paynter, 102, died at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born May 5, 1907 in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of Chester and Irene (Davidson) Winson.

She retired from Snyders in downtown Alton in 1979. She was a longtime member of Cherry Street Baptist Church and now is a member of Godfrey Baptist Church. Mrs. Paynter was one of the first residents at Hillcrest Apartments. On May 8, 1926 in Edwardsville, she married Raymond Paynter. He preceded her in death in October of 1968.

Surviving is a daughter, Wilma Schlueter and her husband Don of Godfrey, a son, Robert Paynter and his wife Grace of Rio Grande, New Mexico, three grandchildren; Deborah Fehlig, Jeffrey Schlueter, and Judith Simpson as well as Betsy, George, and Eva, five great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Harvey Winson, and her sister, Ursula Ruyle.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. Reverend Dr. Glen Greenwood will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Godfrey Baptist Church.
