Lola Harris

Lola D. Harris, 91, of Harris Lane, Fosterburg was promoted to glory at 9:35 a.m. January 12, 2010. She passed away at home with her family by her side.

Lola was born one mile north of Fosterburg on August 3, 1918, the first of seven children born to Robert Raikes and Della Golike. The family soon moved to a farm northwest of Bunker Hill. Lola attended Smalleytown School and graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1936. After high school, she worked several jobs in St. Louis. Then she was employed at Monticello College until her marriage to Everett (Pete) Harris on March 22, 1940. They were blessed with five children. After Pete's death and all the children were in school, Lola began work in the Alton School District Cafeterias. She worked eighteen and one half years at the Fosterburg Grade School Cafeteria until the closing of that school. She retired from the district in 1983.

Lola received Christ as Savior at eight years of age. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fosterburg for seventy years where she had served as church clerk, assistant church treasurer, Sunday school secretary, and teacher. She enjoyed so much serving in VBS and Ladies' Missionary Society, and attending Women's Bible study.

She is survived by her five children: Robert (Judy) of Fosterburg; Joyce Giaquinta of Warrenville, IL; Lois (John) Tilson of Shawnee, KS; Ann (David) Chatlain of Wichita, KS; and Donald (Lucy) Harris of Lawrence, KS. Twelve grandchildren: Peter and Daniel Giaquinta; Douglas, Richard, and Dale Harris; Diane Moffitt; Philip and Kevin Tilson; Michelle Volante; Julia, Donald, and Elaine Harris. Thirty great-grandchildren and one sister, Doris Leverett of Bunker Hill.

She is preceded in death by her husband-Pete, her parents, brothers-Robert, Delbert, Glen and David, sister-Vera Vaughn, son-in-law Arthur Giaquinta, and great-grandson Everett Lee Miles Harris.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday, January 17, as the Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home, 2521 Edwards St. Alton, from 4 to 8 p.m. Celebration Service of Lola's life will be Monday, January 18 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fosterburg.

Burial will be at Short Cemetery, Cottage Hills.

Lola and the family have chosen these memorials: Baptist Mid-Missions, First Baptist Church of Fosterburg debt retirement and BJC Hospice.
