James Bateman

James F. Bateman, 77, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 2010 at his home. Born Oct. 26, 1932 in White Hall, he was the son of Albert and Lena Isabella (Cox) Bateman. He married JoAnn P. Schemmer June 12, 1952 in White Hall. She survives. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he retired as a supervisor for McDonnell-Douglas after 39 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Zan and Andrew Reed of Holly Springs, N.C. and Julia Bateman of South Roxana; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Rhonda Bateman of O'Fallon, Mo. and David Bateman of Glen Carbon; his grandchildren, Luis and Trina Reed, Kristin and Jordan Bateman and Leah, Carson and Camden Bateman; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Bill Goben and Beverly and Tom Howard, all of White Hall; and a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Janet Bateman of Bethalto. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at the Greater Alton Church in Rosewood Heights, where Pastors Bob Hawkins and Tim Gill will officiate services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13. Interment will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery, with military rites by the VFW, Alton Post #1308. Memorials may be made to Christian Family Services, 7955 Big Bend Blvd., Webster Groves, MO 63119 because his grandson Camden was adopted through their organization.
