Ernie Joe Flota, age 77, passed away on January 6, 2010 at home with his family by his side. He was born in Harrisburg, IL. On June 6, 1932 to Ernie and Myrtle Mae (Baker) Flota. Ernie married Luann Stumpf on June 20, 1954 in Columbia, IL. She survives.
Ernie was employed by Metropolitan Life, and Sentry Insurance as an agent for over 30 years, he is presently employed at Bankston Creek Land and Trust. He served his country in the US Navy in the Korean War on the battleship Iowa. He was a member for 50 yrs of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Alton, IL where he was a member of the Session. Ernie was a graduate of SIU Carbondale with a BS in marketing, where he played on the SIU Tennis Team, #2 singles. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters and their spouses; Cindy and John Lewis of Godfrey, IL. Martha and Rick Plunk of Alton, IL. and Laura and Dale Oswald of Independence, MO. two sons; Jeffrey Flota of Alton, IL. and Alan Flota of Marengo, IL. ten grandchildren; Natalie and Amy Lewis, Jason and Lauren Plunk, Van, Joe, and Joni Oswald, Zachary, Jordynnem, and Jake Flota.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother; David Flota.
Visitation will be from 4 pm. to 8 p.m. on, Friday January 8, 2010 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL. Funeral services will be at 10 am on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the 1st Presbyterian Church, 4th and Alby, Alton, IL. with the Rev. Brett Hendrickson officiating.
Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park, in Godfrey, IL. Military rites conducted by the Ritual Team from the Alton VFW Post 1308, of Alton, IL.
Memorials may be made to the 1st Presbyterian Church, 4th and Alby, Alton, lL.
