George G. Sweeney, 85, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab Center. Born April 12, 1924 in Jerseyville Illinois , he was the son of George G. and Hazel M. (Gunterman) Sweeney Sr.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a Sea Bee during WWII and earned the Purple Heart. He was a member of Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton, the Wood River Kiwanis Club and the Alton Eagles FOE No. 254. He retired from Benson Optical after 45 years of service and worked part time for Gent Funeral Home since 1957. On March 27, 1947 in Alton, he married the former Rita Sproules of Brisbane, Australia. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2001.
Surviving are four daughters; Maria Fischer of Springfield, Rita Fischer of Alton, Annita Dunn of Alton, and Joy Butler of Oklahoma City, OK, six grandchildren; Colleen Fischer, Stephanie Casaubon, Kristie Webb, Jamie Rutherford, Jared Fischer, and Jennifer Brooks. He was preceded in death by his wife, a grandson, Ryan Webster Fischer, and two sisters; Hazel Coontz and Mary Parkes.
Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Reverend David Olson will officiate. Burial will be at Grimes-Neely Cemetery in Jerseyville with full Military Honors from VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the Grimes-Neely Cemetery Foundation.
