Billy Summers

Billy R. Summers, age 84, passed away peacefully in his home at 10:22 pm, Wednesday, December 2, 2009. His family was by his side.

He was born in Mt. Vernon, IL on February 23, 1925, to the late Raymond and Genevieve (Ellis) Summers. He married Grace E. Qualkinbush, September 16, 1950 in Bedford, IN.

Billy attended Washington University and graduated from Indiana University in 1948 and in 1955 he received a graduate degree. He was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII & Korean War. He was respectful of both the country and the people during his involvement in the occupation of Japan. He retired from the Army as a Captain with an abundance of stories and many friends.

He was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Alton and a loyal member of Lockhaven Country Club.

During his career he worked with the Olin Corporation, J. C. Smith Construction Company and retired as Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Alton. His later life was spent focused on his family and devoted to his friends.

In addition to his wife, Billy is survived by one son and his spouse Douglas and Patricia Summers of Eden Prairie, MN, one daughter and her spouse Ellen and Timothy Mullarkey of Newtown, PA, and nine reverent grandchildren William Douglas Summers, Katherine Ann Summers, Grace Summers Mullarkey, Elizabeth Bonny Mullarkey, Theresa Mullarkey, Jessica Reynolds, Katie Mullarkey, Timothy Mullarkey Jr. and Sean Mullarkey. He is also survived by one brother and his spouse Charles and Patricia Summers of Kewanee, IL and one sister and her spouse Bonny and John Meyer of Tulsa, OK

Visitation will be at 10am on Friday, December 11th followed by a Memorial Service at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church, 4th and Alby St., Alton, IL. Burial will follow at Alton Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Alton.
