John Howard Mendenhall Sr., 91, passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2009 at Christian Hospital North East, in St. Louis, MO.

He was born on October 27, 1918 in Chicago Heights, IL, son of the late John Franklin & Ethel (Evans) Mendenhall.

He married Alice L. (Reid) in Chicago, IL on June 20, 1942. She survives.

Howard received a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois. He was employed at Olin Brass as a metallurgical engineer for over 40 years, being a brass alloys expert, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Community Congregational UCC in Godfrey for many years and then transferred membership to the Evangelical UCC in Godfrey, where he sang with his wife in the choir. He was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), which he joined in 1961 and became a fellow in their society. Howard loved to golf, was an avid reader, worked as a volunteer at the Crisis Food Center for 20 years, and was a loyal White Sox's fan.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara & Jack Wepler of Alton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug & Stephanie Mendenhall of Alton and John & Susan Mendenhall of Bloomington, IL; seven grandchildren, Travis and Todd Zimmerman, Jeremy Wepler, Jessica and Christopher Mendenhall and Jacob and Alex Levering; one great grandson, Tristan Zimmerman and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Peebles and Gladys & Robert Tuggle both of Downers Grove, IL.

Preceded in death by his parents and one son, Thomas John Mendenhall.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, November 18, 2009, at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL

Funeral service will be at 10 am, on Friday, November 19, 2009, at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL with Pastor Jerry MeCaskey officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to Crisis Food Center.
