Robert "Bob" Charles Schmitt, age 82, went to be with the Lord at 12:45 am, Monday, November 16, 2009, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.


He was born on February 22, 1927, in East St. Louis, IL, to the late Charles E. & Florence (Hetge) Schmitt.

Bob attended Alton public schools, graduating from Alton High School in 1945. Following his return from service, he enrolled at Shurtleff College.

He was married to Melba (Lee) on October 16, 1948, at the Evangelical & Reformed Church on Henry St. in Alton. She survives.

Bob was the owner and operator of Schmitt's Tavern on State House Circle for over 20 years. He was then employed at Central Hardware as an appliance salesman in Alton until he retired. He served in the Army during WWII and was a member of the Alton VFW Post 1308 and the Evangelical UCC of Godfrey, where he served as an usher for many years. He volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels for 20 years. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren's activities in sports and music. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters and sons-in-laws, Ann & John Hamilton of Godfrey, Judy & T. J. Springman of Brighton, Melinda & Ray Bock of Alton and Laurie & Chris Burns of Godfrey; six grandchildren, David Hamilton, Jacob and Christopher Springman, Melissa Bock, and Kevin and Rachel Burns and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary & Harold Ohley and one nephew, Thomas Ohley.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at Elias, Kallal And Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.

Visitation will continue from 10 am until time of the funeral service at 11 am on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at the Evangelical UCC in Godfrey, with Pastor Jerry MeCaskey officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Cremation and private burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be given to Evangelical UCC in Godfrey.
