John T. Doherty, 79, passed away at 11:58 a.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009 at his home.
Born Dec. 27, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York.
He was the son of James and Mary (Kelly) Doherty.
He married Maxine M. Bank Dec. 29, 1956 in Alton. She passed away Dec. 24, 1997 after almost 41 years of marriage.
The U.S. Navy Korean War veteran was a member of VFW, Alton Post #1308. He retired in 1986 from Shell Oil Co., where he worked as an operator.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Valerie Doherty of Bethalto; a daughter, Paula Farmer of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; 6 grandchildren, Nathan, Jessica, Mindy, Nick, Darin and Kelli; a great granddaughter, Amanda; a sister, Peggy Pezza of East Islip, N.Y.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Evelyn Doherty of Melbourne, Fla.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Nicki Arment; a son, Vance Doherty; and a brother, James Doherty.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. Rev. John Blackmore will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the 5 A's animal shelter or any Humane Society.
