Shirley Chapman

Shirley V. Chapman, 92, passed away at 11:20 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009 at Bethalto Care Center.

Born March 18, 1917 in Weakley County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Lou (Crawford) Vinson.
She was married to William Duke until his death in 1945. She later married Ralph Lewis, who also preceded her in death. On Jan. 1, 1954 she married Robert F. Chapman. He passed away in 1992.
A saleslady for Excusive Gift Shop, she also was part owner of Lewis Variety Store. Shirley served as elder in the Moro Presbyterian Church as well as secretary/treasurer and Past President of the Women of the Church. She also was president and secretary/treasurer of the Bethalto Seniors, a vice president and Past President of the Alton Chapter of AARP, and was Mid-south Woman of the Year for her volunteer work with Goodwill Industries.
She is survived by a daughter, Bette Yates of Bethalto; a stepson, Robert F. Chapman, Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren and their spouses, R. Steve and Sherri Yates, Kenny and Jenny Yates, Len and Diana Yates, Robert III and Jennifer Chapman, and Brenda Chapman; 15 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Thomas, William and John Vinson; a sister, Helen Vinson; and her son-in-law Bobby Yates.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, and will continue Friday, July 10 at the Moro Presbyterian Church in Moro from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Charles Hoekstra will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the Bethalto Care Center.
