Mary Jane Ambrose Mayberry, 85, died at 1:58 am Friday May 15, 2009 at Alton Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.

She was born May 16, 1924 in St. Louis, MO the daughter of the late Frank & May (Walsh) Gorman.

She married Charles W. Ambrose in 1941 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton and he preceded her in death, she then married Herman Mayberry who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her companion of 20 years, Ray Cook.

She worked at Olin Matheson, Sunray Café and then became a nurse's aide at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton where she retired from in 1984.

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto where she served on the Ladies Auxiliary, she was a member of the Alton Senior Citizens Plus, the Royal Neighbors of America, and the Belles and Beaus Senior Club, she enjoyed working crossword puzzles, square dancing and she was an avid gardener.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law and two sons and daughters-in-law, Charlene & John Barth of Bloomington, Bill & Abby Ambrose of Bethalto, Gary & Vicki Ambrose of Bethalto, and Patricia & Juan Woods of Granite City; eleven grandchildren and spouses, Teresa & Shawn Callies, Darin & Jennifer Ambrose, Michael Ambrose, Charles & Candy Ambrose, Gary & Ramona Ambrose, Brad & Casey Ambrose, Melissa Ambrose, Tari & Richard Rickey, Tammy Boswell & her companion Chris Bunch , and Tracey & Elvin Pruett, nineteen great grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia Walter of Evansville, IL, Margaret Elliott of Midlothian, VA, and Darlene & Michael Garland of Brighton, two brothers and a sisters-in-law, Donald & Dean Gorman of Smithton, IL and Joseph & Shirley Gorman of Red Bud, IL and Loretta Gorman of Trenton, IL. She is also survived by her extended family, Ken & Margie Cook and their children, Abby & Phillip Cook of Pennsylvania.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Corey Ambrose and a brother, Robert Gorman and her companion of 20 years, Ray Cook.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Sunday May 17, 2009 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto where a rosary service will be held at 4:00 pm

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Monday May 18, 2009 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto.

Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Masses or the American Cancer Society.
