Paul E. Pope, 84, passed away at 4:15 am Saturday March 7, 2009 at home with his family by his side.
He was born on February 13, 1925 in Decatur, IL; the son of Fearl & Floy (Hebel) Pope.
He served his country in the Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict as a Chief Petty Officer for 9 years and then owned and operated Pope Appraisals.
He was the National Director of N AIFA; a member of the Masonic Lodge of Decatur, past president of Alton-Wood River Board of Realtors, a lifetime member of Alton VFW Post 1308; past chairman of Real Estate Committee at Lewis & Clark Community College and a charter member of the Alton Renegades Youth Football Association.
He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by four sons, Tommy Summers of San Diego, CA, John "Tony" Pope of Dallas, TX, Joseph Pope of Troy, IL, and Eric Dickerson of Alton; four daughters, Dixie Eves of Pueblo, CO, Dianne Shaw of Desoto, TX, Julie Pope of Cedar Hill, TX, and Kelli Silhavy of Collinsville, IL,; one sister, JoAnn Stephens of Decatur, IL and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he has spent the last 9 years with a very special friend Mary Curtin of Alton, his family's guardian angel.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Dean Pope; and one sister, Phyllis Pope.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday March 10, 2009 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton where Masonic Rites will be conducted, and Military Rites will be conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.
Cremation rites will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alton Renegades Youth Football Association or the Women's Auxiliary of the Alton VFW Post 1308.
