Robert W. "Bob" Gabriel, age 83, died at 8:45 am on Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at his home with his family by his side in Fosterburg, IL.
He was born on January 13 1925, to the late, Arthur and Adele (Hellmich) Gabriel, in East St. Louis, IL.
He proudly served his nation in World War II in the United States Army and received both the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
He was a graduate of Washington University with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for the I.B.M. Corporation for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Audrey (Roos) Gabriel; they were married on March 5, 1949 in Alton, IL.
Robert is also survived his son Dr. Keith and his wife Jane Gabriel of Springfield, Il, his daughters Kathleen and her husband Bryan Chapell of St. Louis, Mo, Karen Gabriel of Saluda, North Carolina and Kristine and Christopher Yates of Asheville, North Carolina, his nine grandchildren John Gabriel, Rebecca Gabriel, Colin Chapell, Jordan Chapell, Corinne Mather, Kaitlin Chapell, Jason Yates, Marissa Yates, Ben Yates, and his sister Dorris Gabriel of Bunker Hill, IL.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Rosemary Gabriel.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm, Sunday December 28, 2008 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral in Alton, IL. with Funeral Services at the Main Street Methodist Church at 10 am, with the Rev. Bob Phillips officiating. The VFW post 1308 will accord military rites graveside at Fosterburg Cemetery.
