Lorraine Richey

Lorraine Alma Richey, age 93, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2008, at Sparta Community Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Lorraine was born on January 21, 1915 in Owensville, Missouri, the daughter of the late Arthur E. & Pauline L. (Havelka) White.

She married Elsworth H. Richey on December 11, 1937, at the East Alton Methodist Church. He passed away in 1974.

Lorraine moved from Missouri to East Alton in 1918 and lived over 25 years in North Alton before moving to Brighton in 1965. She graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1932. Following high school, Lorraine worked for a period of time at The Tannery. She attended the Alton Business College, and then began work as a bookkeeper at Alton Loan Company. She later worked at Sears Roebuck Co. in Alton and was the bookkeeper for Superior Interiors in Godfrey ? a position she held until her retirement. Lorraine was a member of the Elm Street Presbyterian Church. She served as elder and treasurer, and was active in the Sunshine Class. In 1965 she transferred to the First Presbyterian Church in Brighton, where she held the same positions as well as serving on several Pastor Search Committees. She was an active member of Alton Chapter #775 OES and later the Brighton Chapter OES. She held various offices in both chapters, including serving as chapter secretary for the Brighton Chapter for more than twenty years. She was presented her 50-year membership pin in 1999.

Lorraine is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and & James E. Stevens of St. Louis County; two grandchildren, Julie A. Stevens of St. Louis County and Jeff Stevens and his wife, Kara of Colorado Springs, CO; two great-grandsons, Bryce & Glenn Stevens of Colorado Springs, CO; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Richey Narup of Alton and Ellen Richey of Rosewood Heights and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Hayes and Dorothy Narup Montgomery and a nephew, Donald Narup.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Brighton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park, in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Alzheimer's Association.
