Nelson Moses

Nelson L. Moses, age 92, passed to eternal life at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008 at St. Anthony's Health Center.

He was born on August 14, 1916 in St. Louis, MO. He was the son of Regina Moses Kary and his stepfather was Henry Kary.

His parents were stepfather Henry Kary and Renina (Moses) Kary.

He married Edna Elizabeth (Miller) on July 4, 1940 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton; she passed away June 28, 2007.

Nelson as young man graduated from Brussels high school class of 1935, which was the 1st graduating class from that high school, and then from 1936 to 1939 he was in the CCC Camps. He served his country from 1944 to 1945 in the Army during WWII. He was employed in the local # 553 plumbers & pipe fitters union for over 37 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and K of C, both in Wood River. He had a passion for gardening, and he and his wife owned and operated a small farm and orchard in Calhoun County throughout their married life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet & Gerald Hall of East Alton, Virginia & Edward Hoekstra of Eureka, IL, and Mary Anne Moses-Farley and her husband Raymond of Columbia, IL; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul Moses of Wood River, James & Kathy Moses of East Alton and Gilbert & Lisa Moses of Alton; 15 grandchildren, Rick Moses, Eric Moses, Amy Moses, Aaron Toenjes, Christopher Toenjes, Aria Hise, Joshua Hoekstra, Samuel Hoekstra, Amanda Hoekstra, Peter Hoekstra, Jeremy Hall, Joseph Hall, Michael Hall, Marisa Moses and Jamie Moses; 5 great grandchildren, Aidan, Morgan, Regina, Dakota and Kaden; a sister-n-law, Loretta Hellrung; a nephew, Larry Hellrung of Alton and other nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, mother, and stepfather.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2008 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with a rosary service at 4:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River with Father James Flach officiating.

Burial will follow at Cresswell Cemetery in Golden Eagle.

Memorials may be made to Masses at Holy Angels Catholic Church or the American Lung Association.
