Helen M. Martin, 81, formerly of Hartford, passed away 12:38am on Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton. She was born on November 4, 1935, in Dow, Illinois, the daughter of the late Ples Crafton and Edith (Campion) Wheeler. She married S. Lee Martin on July 21, 1952, in Arkansas, and he preceded her in death on November 17, 2011. Survivors include five sons and four daughters in law: Dennis and Pam Martin of Wood River, Randy and Kathy Martin of Bethalto, Rev. Jeffrey and Ramona Martin of Litchfield, Mark Martin of Granite City, Rob and Amy Martin of Hartford, seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great – grandchildren, two brothers and a sister in law: John and JoAnn Crafton of Jerseyville, Bob Crafton of Kentucky, and a sister: Debbie Hampton of Kentucky.
Helen was formerly employed as a private duty nurse for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Bethalto.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Mildred Bridges and Doris Haynes, and a brother: William Crafton.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 10am until time of funeral services at 1pm on Monday, January 23, 2017, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 1pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials are suggested to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.
