Edwin Gallagher

Edwin Spencer Gallagher, 86, passed away at 5:45 pm Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the home of his daughter, under the care of BJC Hospice. 

 

He was born on January 19, 1927 in East Alton, IL, the son of Elmer E. and Louie G. (Boswell) Gallagher.

He married Leone Margaret Bennett on November 1, 1947 in East Alton, IL, who passed away on May 6, 2012.

Edwin served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II.  He was a carpenter for Local 633 in Granite Cite for 50 years, retiring in 1983.  He was of the Baptist faith; was a member of the American Legion, the Nation Rifle Association and the Midwest Tool Association.  He enjoyed working and collecting antique tools. 

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Lynn & Diane Louise Gallagher of Red Lodge, MT, two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Renee & Mike Pennington of Creal Springs, IL, and Sue Ellen & Michael Goebel of Prairietown, IL; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Gallagher of Alton; ten grandchildren, Christina Kiel (Wayne) of Godfrey, Dawn Montgomery (Mike) of Glen Carbon, Tully Monroe (Jen) Gallagher of Golden, CO, Nolan Spencer Gallagher of San Francisco, CA, Kristin Lee Pennington of Creal Springs, IL, Kaitlin Renee Pennington of Creal Springs, IL, Justin Michael (Jessi) Goebel of Hamel, Jared Matthew (Ashley) Goebel of Edwardsville, Jonathan Marc (Kendall) Goebel of Champaign, IL, and Lindsey Sue (Tyler) Thornton of Danvers, IL; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Hugh “H.A.” Gallagher (Dorothy) of Bethalto and a sister June (Jerry) Link of Edwardsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Edwin Randall “Randy” Gallagher, and three brothers, Lawrence Boswell, Jack Gallagher and Leslie Gallagher.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday, September 27, 2013 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto where funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 28, 2013 with Pastor Dale Skeesick officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to BJC Hospice.

A special thank you to his loving and invaluable caretaker for the last year, Jessie Douglas of Glen Carbon.  The family would also like to thank BJC Hospice nurses, Cindy and Brenda.
