GLEN CARBON – Glen Carbon Mayor Bob Marcus thanked local agencies and organizations for helping rescue multiple dogs from a village residence in what the mayor called a rare and “horrific tragedy.”
At the Aug. 25, 2026 Village Board meeting, Marcus thanked members of the Glen Carbon Police Department, Building and Zoning Department and village staff for their assistance in recovering over 20 dogs from inside a home on Glen Carbon Road, including some that were found dead.

“This was a horrific tragedy, and one not commonly found in our village,” Marcus said. “Our employees acted with courage, care and compassion in working to save the dogs. On behalf of myself and all the Village Board, we are proud of you and thank you for your actions.”
Marcus said several other organizations and agencies were involved in the rescue, including the Metro East Humane Society, Hawthorn Animal Hospital, Partners For Pets, Found A Hound Rescue, the Madison County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, Serendipity GSD Rescue, the Edwardsville Police Department and community service officers.
“All worked together to gain access to the home and get the animals to safety,” Marcus said. “The investigation remains ongoing. We appreciate everyone’s teamwork and cooperation throughout the process.”
The Glen Carbon Police Department announced last Friday, Aug. 21, 2026 that over 20 animals, both living and dead, were found inside a home in the 200 block of Glen Carbon Road. The animals were discovered after officers executed a search warrant on the home as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.
Each of the animals were removed from the home and brought to Hawthorn Animal Hospital before being placed in the care of local animal rescue organizations who were able to provide emergency care, according to the department.
“At this time, all animals are receiving medical care in safe and loving homes,” the department stated in its Aug. 21 announcement.
