GODFREY – The Godfrey Fire Protection District is now being lead by a familiar face for many in the department.
The Godfrey Fire Protection District Board of Trustees honored retiring Chief Eric Cranmer for his 38 years of service to the community at their meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

“Although he is retiring, a small piece of him remains with all the firefighters he has served with, lead, instructed, mentored, and cared for over his 38 years,” the department announced on social media. “In one way or another, he has helped shape each firefighter on this department and we wish him the very best in his retirement! Congratulations Chief Cranmer!”
Ben Hamberg, who previously served as assistant chief, has officially been named the new chief of the Godfrey Fire Protection District.
The board also recognized three promotions made at the same meeting. Firefighter Joel Naylor was promoted to lieutenant, Lieutenant Jake Elder was promoted to captain and Captain Brian Estes was promoted to assistant chief.
