WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Mary Miller (IL-15) introduced the Student Voter Data Protection Act to protect college students’ personal information from being shared without their consent for partisan voter registration efforts. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) is leading the legislation in the Senate.

The bill amends the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to explicitly prohibit private student data from being shared for voter registration efforts without the student’s consent and establishes an opt-in standard for such disclosures.
“The Student Voter Data Protection Act puts a hard stop to Left-wing data harvesting, making student data strictly opt-in and cutting off the pipeline to non-consensual personal information,” said Congresswoman Miller. “I am proud to lead this effort in the House alongside Senator Mike Lee to stand up for our students' basic privacy rights.”
"Partisan organizations should not have access to college students' personal data under the guise of civic engagement," said Senator Lee. "Our bill closes the loopholes that allow institutions to disregard the consent of their students. If leftist groups want a student’s info for electioneering, they can do it the old-fashioned way: standing on campus with a clipboard."
The Student Voter Data Protection Act would:
- Amend FERPA to explicitly prevent private student data from being shared without consent for voter registration drives.
- Require student participation in such data sharing to be opt-in rather than opt-out, ensuring students control whether their personal information is disclosed.
