Located on Airport Road in Godfrey, Longevity Senior Living has a number of services that aim to help aging community members enjoy their golden years. Allison Combs, director of sales and marketing, noted that the senior living community is a chance for seniors to connect and get the medical assistance they need.
“We are like a stationary cruise ship for seniors,” she said. “We’re going to wine, dine, entertain, have a good time. Arts and crafts, live entertainment, transportation, those kinds of things are on-hand. Then let’s say you need assistance inside your apartment. We have five levels of care. Really, you can age beautifully in our community.”
Longevity offers both independent and assisted living options. There are nurses onsite 24/7 and personalized care plans for those who need them. Longevity will even work with hospice to ensure you can stay in your home at Longevity.
Combs explained that the State of Illinois has a few rules that would require someone to move to a nursing home. “Major” health concerns, like a tracheotomy, a feeding tube or need for a Hoyer lift, would require a person to transition to a nursing home.
But Longevity can support seniors through almost any other crisis, or they can bring in support. Because of Longevity’s five levels of assisted living, most seniors can stay there for years and avoid going to a nursing home.
“I’ve really seen a need, because the nursing homes are not really what they used to be once upon a time,” Combs said. “At Longevity Living, we’re offering up to five levels of care, which is a lovely way to really bypass that nursing home setting, unless you’re needing a more clinical type of care, which most of us are not at this stage of the game. We’re just trying to have a great, fun time.”
In addition to their daily activities, Longevity offers a community-based monthly event that’s open to the public. On Aug. 6, the community can join them for “Mutts and Melons,” which will feature a pet parade throughout the building.
Combs also oversees Aging 101, an online resource offered on the last Tuesday of every month. These webinars aim to help families navigate difficult conversations and start planning for senior and end-of-life care.
Combs recognizes that it can be “scary” or “weird” to make decisions for your loved one when they need a higher level of care. This is why she urges families to talk about these topics early. Seventy percent of Longevity residents come to the facility after a crisis; if you plan ahead, you can avoid stress and make sure you are carrying out your loved one’s wishes.
“Unless we talk about it, those who are advocating for those who are getting older are just guessing on what to do. So really some good, proactive conversations is the key,” she said. “Let’s have some conversations and be proactive and go tour some communities before you end up in the hospital and possibly then need something.”
