As we face the worst health crisis in generations, it is time for us to come together and hold each other up. Madison County now has its first confirmed case of coronavirus and it is without question that things will get worse and we will see many, many more cases here in our own community.

Mayor Cheryl Maguire and the Wood River City Council need to step up to the plate and protect and defend the residents of Wood River as we confront this invisible invader. Wood River must immediately waive all water and sewer fees and reconnect any water service that has been disconnected. No one should fear that their water will be cut off if they struggle to pay their bills during this time. In addition, the city should immediately provide financial assistance to those that will be unable to put food on the table as they lose jobs or are laid off for periods of time. These programs should be in effect until this pandemic has been defeated.

If we wait for Springfield or Washington to step in and provide us help, we will be waiting until it is too late. Wood River must step up, as should all communities in the RiverBend. We will never forget how our leaders choose to respond.
