Jerseyville City Council members unanimously approved an ordinance amending a section of the City Code regarding vending machines for tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and alternative nicotine products at their June 23, 2026 meeting.
The current Jerseyville City Code only accounts for “cigarette machines” under a section last updated in 2010. Mayor Kevin Stork said the new ordinance accounts for vending machines carrying newer nicotine products, such as vapes, e-cigarettes and more.
Stork said the City Code update was prompted by a request from a local business owner.
“Somebody came to the city looking to put an e-cigarette vending machine in one of our establishments,” Stork said. “When we were looking at our ordinance to give them direction, we realized we hadn’t updated it for vaping.”
While the State of Illinois allows tobacco/nicotine vending machines inside establishments that sell alcohol, Stork said city officials were concerned about these machines being in close proximity to young children. After consulting with Police Chief Danny Green, the mayor said city officials decided to only allow these machines in establishments open strictly to individuals ages 21 and up.
Stork and Green estimated there are currently only two establishments in the city that would meet this criteria: The Reserve at 1600 S. State Street Unit J and the Jem Bar at 121 W. Pearl St.
