JERSEYVILLE - Jersey Community High School has inducted the first members of its National Green Schools Society chapter in 2026, establishing an environmental honor society that recognizes students for leadership, service, and academic achievement.
Jersey Community Unit School District No. 100 announced the inaugural group this past week, recognizing chapter adviser Alli Gettings and the student inductees.

The National Green Schools Society is a chapter-based organization that recognizes students and schools from kindergarten through 12th grade for environmental efforts.
At the high school level, chapters focus on individual and team environmental service projects. Students must complete a minimum number of service hours before induction. Members then must commit to at least 20 hours of service annually to qualify for awards and recognition, earning hours through environmental service and environmental education. High school chapters also elect officers and conduct fundraising activities.
The society’s requirements vary by grade level. Middle school members pledge at least 20 hours of environmental service to their schools and communities but do not need prior service hours to join. Elementary chapters emphasize group projects, such as recycling, composting and school gardens, with no minimum service-hour requirement to join.
