GODFREY – The Village of Godfrey will help promote a solar program to local residents and businesses this summer and fall.

Godfrey Village Board members voted unanimously on June 16, 2026 to enter the village into the Switch Together Group Solar Buy program.

Virginia Woulfe-Beile, chair of the Godfrey Sustainability Commission, previously said the program’s purpose is to “make rooftop and ground-mount solar affordable and available for residents and small businesses.” She said the program would be used for small, grid-fed solar projects rather than large-scale solar farms.

The program will run until October of 2026 to spread awareness and education for those interested in solar installations at their homes or small businesses. Woulfe-Beile said energy generated by solar installations under the program will be fed back into the grid, and participants will be credited on their power bills.

Woulfe-Beile also said the Switch Together Group Solar Buy program vets solar installers to ensure local residents steer clear of “bad actors.” She noted there is no cost for the village to participate, but the nonprofit Midwest Renewable Energy Association [MREA] has asked to partner with the village in promoting the program.

Trustee Gerard Fischer previously asked Village Attorney Bryan Dooling if the village runs any legal risk by including its logo on material associated with the Switch Together program. At the board’s June 16 meeting, Dooling said there would be no risk to the village if the MREA is willing to enter into an indemnification agreement protecting the village from any lawsuit that may arise with solar companies involved in the program.

Woulfe-Beile supported adding the indemnification agreement clause, noting the village likely should not work with companies unwilling to enter such an agreement. Trustee Sarah Woodman moved to amend the item to add the indemnification agreement requirement, which was approved unanimously.
