ALTON - The Hayner Public Library District has several events coming up in August, and you can enjoy them all for free.

Executive Director Mary Cordes expressed her excitement for the upcoming programs. From a Beatles tribute to a bagpipes performance to a silent disco, Hayner has a variety of activities available. Cordes hopes to welcome many community members to come out and enjoy.
“It should be a lot of fun,” she said of the upcoming programs.
Throughout the month of August, the library will collect new and used crayons from patrons. Hayner will then donate the crayons to Riverbend Head Start, “giving them a second life” for the kids there to use, Cordes said.
From 10–11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, Hayner’s Alton Square Mall branch will host “Self-Care with Eileen Wolfington: Walking the Labyrinth.” This program encourages walking meditation through a fabric labyrinth.
At 6 p.m. on Aug. 6, pianist and vocalist Jay Daniels will present “Here, There, Everywhere — A Tribute to the Beatles.” Daniels will play music from “Revolver,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and “Magical Mystery Tour” at the Alton Square Mall branch.
On Friday, Aug. 7, Hayner will host their quarterly Summer Reading Retreat at the mall library. There will be snacks, a craft, and plenty of time to chat with other patrons about favorite books and authors.
“It’s kind of a way for people who love to read to get together and talk and share their favorite titles while doing something, so we’ll have a craft while we talk about that,” Cordes explained.
This will be followed by a program titled “Nicolas Brown — Uilleann Irish Bagpipes” at 6 p.m. on Aug. 18. Brown will play the bagpipes and share more about the history of the instrument at the mall library.
That same night, the mall library will also host the Hayner Cookbook Club. This month’s program is fall-themed, with a focus on slow cooker recipes. Community members can make a slow cooker recipe and bring the dish to the library to share.
Cordes is especially looking forward to the Silent Disco on Aug. 20. Patrons at the mall library will wear wireless headphones that play synchronized music. They can complete a scavenger hunt at the library, then move to the multipurpose room for mocktails and dancing.
Equally exciting is the Bridgerton Summer Soiree the next day, Aug. 21. Fans of the “Bridgerton” book series or TV show can enjoy themed games, prizes, refreshments and more at the mall library.
From 12–1 p.m. on Aug. 26, Hayner will continue its partnership with AARP for the “AARP’s Everyday Tech for Everyday Life: Saving Money with Tech” event. This in-person webinar, geared for all ages, will teach basic ways to utilize technology.
