EDWARDSVILLE – The Edwardsville Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies across Illinois in a statewide effort to encourage safer driving and reduce speeding.

From July 7 through July 31, 2026, residents and visitors may notice additional traffic patrols throughout Edwardsville. Officers will focus on speeding and other behaviors that can increase the risk of crashes.
"Our goal is not simply to issue tickets," said Lt. Matt Senci of the Edwardsville Police Department. "We want everyone traveling through Edwardsville, whether they are driving, walking, biking, or riding as a passenger, to get where they are going safely. Slowing down, staying focused, and being mindful of others on the road can make a real difference."
Speeding can reduce a driver's ability to react safely to changing traffic conditions, pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles, and unexpected hazards. Even small reductions in speed can help lower the severity of crashes and improve safety for everyone sharing the roadway.
During the campaign, and in addition to their normal duties, Edwardsville Police officers will work to remind drivers of posted speed limits and address unsafe driving behaviors when necessary. The department encourages motorists to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and help create safer streets throughout the community.
The speed enforcement effort is part of the "Speeding Catches Up With You" campaign and is made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT. It also supports IDOT's broader "It's Not a Game" media campaign.
