Edwardsville Man Charged With Leaving Accident Scene, Driving On Revoked License

EDWARDSVILLE – A man from Edwardsville accused of leaving the scene of an accident while driving with a revoked license for the eighth time faces new charges in Madison County.

Clayton C. Shaffer, 50, of Edwardsville, was charged on Sept. 2, 2026 with one count each of driving while license is revoked (a Class 4 felony) and leaving the scene of an accident (a Class A misdemeanor).

Shaffer allegedly drove a 2005 Lincoln Navigator on State Route 143 in Edwardsville on July 20, 2026, while his driver’s license was revoked for a previous offense of driving under the influence.

Shaffer was reportedly involved in a motor vehicle accident with a 2019 Chevy Silverado on the same date, resulting in damage to the vehicle. He is accused of failing to stop his vehicle and notify the vehicle owner or nearest police authority to prepare a written report of the accident.

Charging documents note Shaffer has been convicted on seven prior occasions for driving on a revoked license, including twice in Madison County and twice in Randolph County, Ill. in 2004, once in Madison County in 2005, and twice in McLean County, Ill. in 2009.

The Edwardsville Police Department presented the latest case against Shaffer, who was ordered released from custody pending trial.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
