ALTON — For two hours this Friday afternoon, the heart of Alton will beat a little louder. On July 24, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Soulcial Kitchen will host its Block Party for Good at Soulcial Square (Market and E 5th street) — an open-air celebration where every plate, every bag of groceries, and every service offered comes with the same price tag: free.

The event pairs the festive energy of a summer block party with something rarer — practical help delivered without paperwork, without qualification lines, and without judgment. Soulcial Kitchen's Currency of Caring partner truck will serve free, hot, restaurant-quality meals, while free groceries — fresh produce included — will be distributed compliments of the St. Louis Foodbank. Healthcare partners will offer on-site screenings alongside community resources and social services support.
“Everyone welcome” isn't a slogan for the organizers; it's the operating model. There are no eligibility forms and no questions asked. Neighbors are simply invited to come, eat, gather what they need, and stay for the music and company.
The block party is the latest expression of what Soulcial Kitchen calls dignified dining — the conviction that how food is offered matters as much as the food itself. The mission-driven hospitality group, founded by retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General John Michel and his wife Holly, operates on a simple organizational creed: there is no such thing as a throwaway life.
That philosophy runs through the group's broader work across the region, including its Currency of Caring initiative — a tokenized giving program through which donors purchase $8 meal tokens redeemable for a free hot meal at dozens of participating restaurants and food trucks. Friday's event extends that same spirit from the tabletop to the town square.
“Our Monthly block parties is what community looks like when nobody has to earn their seat at the table. Friday in Alton, the meal is free, the groceries are free, the care is free — because dignity should never carry a cover charge,” added John Michel.
The Block Party for Good takes place this Friday, July 24, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Soulcial Square in Alton, Illinois. No registration is required. Everyone is welcome.
