Officers responded at about 4 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a shooting on the exit ramp, the O'Fallon Police Department said. According to the early investigation, the altercation began while the two drivers were traveling on Interstate 64. Both vehicles then exited the interstate and stopped on the Winghaven exit ramp.

Preliminary evidence and witness statements indicate that a 35-year-old man got out of his vehicle during the altercation and was shot multiple times by the driver of the other vehicle, police said.

The suspected shooter remained at the scene, called 911 to report the incident and was detained by responding officers for questioning, according to police. Investigators also recovered a firearm at the scene.

Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
