GODFREY — A 31-year-old Alton man was pronounced dead after a single-vehicle crash early Sunday, July 12, 2026, in the 7400 block of Montclair Avenue in Godfrey, where Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a phone crash-detection alert, authorities said.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:20 a.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, and, upon arrival, found a black Jeep Grand Cherokee that had left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said a preliminary investigation found the Jeep had been traveling northbound on Montclair Avenue before the crash.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curb and a mailbox, and then overturned several times, authorities said.

The driver and occupant, Anthony M. Stewart, 31, of Alton, was pronounced deceased.

The crash remains under investigation.
