WEST ALTON, MO. - A 40-year-old Fairview Heights, Illinois, man died on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, after his SUV overturned and he was ejected on southbound U.S. 67 in St. Charles County, according to a crash report.

The crash occurred at 4:20 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, north of Riverlands Way, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in the report. The Missouri Highway Patrol said in the report that the driver overcorrected, causing his 2013 Ford Explorer to slide across all lanes of traffic and leave the right side of the road.

The SUV struck a sign with its left side, traveled down a grassy embankment and overturned, striking the ground multiple times. The driver was ejected, and the vehicle came to rest on the embankment, Missouri State Police said.

Missouri State Police added that the man, whose name was not included in the report, was not wearing a safety device. Christian EMS personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at 4:57 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. Lonning Mortuary Services transported his body to the St. Louis County morgue.

The Explorer was totaled and towed by A2B Towing.
