ALTON — The Alton Police Department issued 68 speeding citations during a July 2026 traffic safety campaign in Alton aimed at reminding motorists to slow down to save lives and reduce highway fatalities, the department said.

The campaign was part of a speed enforcement effort conducted by the Alton Police Department and other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois.

During the campaign, Alton police also issued three citations for suspended or revoked licenses.

“Speeding causes unnecessary dangers on our roads,” said Sgt. Mike Roderfeld. “Speed greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object, or an unexpected curve. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers, and other motorists at tremendous risk.”

Roderfield and the Alton Police are hopeful the recent enforcement shows motorists they are serious about individuals driving at the speed limit at all times in the city.

The enforcement effort was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
