
EAST ST. LOUIS - Illinois State Police and the East St. Louis Police Department are investigating what authorities described as a targeted mass shooting against a family in East St. Louis that left five people dead and at least two others shot, officials said Sunday, July 12, 2026.

The five victims, all from East St. Louis, were identified as 49-year-old Cherie L. May, 24-year-old Devin D. May, 74-year-old Patricia A. May, 21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson and 25-year-old Shania W. Thompson.
According to a July 12, 2026, information from Illinois State Police, at least seven members of the targeted family were shot at multiple locations in the East St. Louis area. Five of those victims have been confirmed dead.
State Police said two suspects, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody Sunday after officers executed a Precision Immobilization Technique, or PIT, maneuver on the vehicle the suspect was driving.
Authorities said there is no known threat to the public at this time.
Illinois State Police said it has been in close contact with the State’s Attorney’s Office and will be seeking charges against the suspects.
The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available, according to the release.
