Cathy Hensley, a communications staff member for the City of Edwardsville, said she spoke with an Edwardsville Fire Department captain just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, who reported the collapse happened between 9 and 9:30 a.m. on June 30, 2026, at the middle school building, which has been under renovation.
Five people were in the vicinity when the collapse happened during the project, according to the fire captain. Two individuals were sent to area hospitals for evaluation, though officials did not know the nature of their injuries. Two others refused medical treatment, and one person did not require it.
Hensley said she was not sure where in the building the collapse occurred. She also said she did not know what type of work was underway as part of the construction project.
Construction has been underway at the Edwardsville middle school during the last two summers with massive renovations.
S.M. Wilson & Co. issued a statement that the collapse did not occur on S.M. Wilson's part of the Lincoln Middle School project, and it also said it is not contracted with the company that was involved in the incident on Tuesday.
