GODFREY – A Godfrey resident seeking to launch fireworks on July 3, 2026 will have to raise their liability insurance coverage to $1 million before securing a permit.
The consideration and approval of a fireworks permit for Bob Mueller was on the Village Board agenda for June 16, 2026. When the item came up for a vote, Trustee Gerard Fischer said he was “uncomfortable” with Mueller’s certificate of property insurance showing $300,000 in liability coverage.
“Is there any way we can have him move that up to $1 million? I just feel uncomfortable with $300,000 – he could do that with a phonecall,” Fischer said. “It’s minimal dollars to change that, but … I think for a fireworks permit, we should at least have $1 million shown for liability.”
The Godfrey Village Code of Ordinances requires anyone holding a fireworks display within the village to first apply for a permit. While the applicant is required to submit evidence of liability insurance, the code does not list an exact dollar amount, instead requiring an “amount deemed sufficient” by the mayor.
Trustees ultimately approved the fireworks permit for Mueller on the condition that he raise his liability insurance coverage amount from $300,000 to $1 million.
Village Board members also unanimously approved a fireworks permit from J&M Displays. The company is set to facilitate the fireworks display for the Godfrey Family Fun Fest at Glazebrook Park from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on July 4, 2026.
Trustee Sarah Woodman asked about the amount of insurance coverage for the village event. Fischer said J&M Displays carries an “umbrella” insurance policy totaling $9 million.
