SPRINGFIELD – For many Americans, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. It is the first nationally celebrated warm-weather holiday of the year, and many Illinoisians will participate in such activities as grilling, boating, swimming, and drinking. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) encourages everyone that plans on consuming alcohol to be responsible and know your limits.

If you plan on drinking, the following tips are provided to help you plan to celebrate safely:

  • Pace yourself, know your limits, and drink plenty of water, especially on hot days.
  • Eat food before, during, and after consuming alcohol.
  • Designate a sober driver, schedule a rideshare, or take public transportation.
  • If boating, designate a sober captain and wear a life jacket, as recommended by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
  • Provide plenty of non-alcoholic beverages as an option for yourself and others.
  • Watch for signs of overconsumption among friends and family.

We know the whole body is affected by alcohol use and impaired judgment may lead to unwanted consequences. That’s why it’s so important to follow safe drinking measures. According to MedlinePlus, “Alcohol slows your breathing rate, heart rate, and how well your brain functions. These effects may appear within 10 minutes and peak at around 40 to 60 minutes.”

The ILCC wants you to celebrate safely this weekend. “Social drinking is common during the holidays, and more so during the summer,” said Illinois Liquor Control Commission Executive Director, Lisa Gardner. “Be safe, have fun, plan ahead, and always drink responsibly. The best celebrations are when everyone comes home.”
