ALTON – Two men from Alton were charged on the same day in separate domestic battery cases, marking their latest felony charges in Madison County Court.

James F. Carleton, 42, of Alton, was charged on April 24, 2026, with his second or subsequent offense of domestic battery, a Class 4 felony.
The day before April 23, 2026, Carleton allegedly knowingly caused bodily harm to a household or family member. Charging documents state he had previously been convicted of unlawfully violating an Order of Protection in 2025 in a prior Madison County case.
In a separate case also filed on April 24, 2026, 37-year-old Elgin D. Longstreet of Alton was charged with a Class 4 felony count of domestic battery, his second or subsequent such offense.
Longstreet is accused of knowingly causing harm to a family or household member on July 4, 2025. He had previously been convicted of aggravated domestic battery in a 2019 Madison County case.
The Alton Police Department presented both of the latest cases against Carleton and Longstreet. Carleton was ordered released from custody pending trial, while Longstreet was ordered remanded to jail for his initial court appearance in this case.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
