Larry F. Stahl, an 84-year-old Belleville native who played Major League Baseball as an outfielder from 1964 to 1973, died Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Caseyville Nursing and Rehab in Caseyville, Illinois. Stahl was born June 29, 1941, in Belleville. Cremation services were held, the obituary said. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Stahl, a left-handed batter and thrower, made his Major League Baseball debut on Sept. 11, 1964, for the Kansas City Athletics and last appeared in the majors Sept. 30, 1973, for the Cincinnati Reds. The Belleville native also played for the New York Mets and San Diego Padres. Stahl's career included a notable moment on Sept. 2, 1972, at Wrigley Field, when he drew a walk as a pinch-hitter against Chicago Cubs pitcher Milt Pappas with two outs in the ninth inning, ending Pappas’ bid for a perfect game. Stahl finished his Major League Baseball career with a .232 batting average, 36 home runs, and 163 runs batted in, according to Wikipedia. Primarily an outfielder, Stahl's best year was 1971 at age 30, when in 114 games for the Padres, he hit .253 with eight home runs and 36 runs batted in. Stahl finished his MLB career with 400 career hits. The Cincinnati Reds purchased his contract in late 1972, where he ended his career. In his one postseason appearance in the 1973 National League Championship Series with the Reds, Stahl had two hits in four at-bats.
