BASEBALL

JERSEY 6, GILLESPIE 2: A pair of three-run innings, in the fourth and sixth, helped give Jersey the home win over Gillespie.

Evan Cheek had two hits for the Panthers, while Issac Hackethal drove in two runs. Shane Lamer went five innings on the mound to get the win, striking out four.

Jersey opens its season 1-0, while the Miners start at 0-1.

COLUMBIA 3, ST. JOSEPH-OGDEN 1: Columbia scored twice in the third, and traded runs with St. Joseph-Ogden in the sixth to win on the road.

Brody Landgraf had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, while Connor Basinski went five innings on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Columbia is now 1-1, while the Spartans open at 0-1.

In other games played on Wednesday, Mascoutah topped Teutopolis 3-1, Granite City scored a run in the sixth to defeat Waterloo Gibault Catholic 2-1, Alton edged Marquette Catholic 2-1, Pittsfield won over Greenfield Northwestern 13-3, and Civic Memorial took a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Home School Patriots.

GIRLS SOCCER

ROXANA 4, GATEWAY LEGACY CHRISTIAN 2: Samantha Cline, Karsyn Kamp, Sophie Powers, and Gianna Stassi all scored for Roxana in their season-opening win over Gateway Legacy, of Florissant, Mo., at Norman Lewis Field.

Sidney Ufert made three saves in goal for the Shells, who open at 1-0-0, while the Lions start at 0-1-0.

BELLEVILLE WEST 3, ROCHESTER 0: Hannah Sternau had a brace (two goals) while Livi Schaffer also scored in West's season-opening win at Bob Goalby Field.

Brooke Stellhorn had five saves in goal for the Maroons, while Lily Brown made one save as the goalkeepers shared the clean sheet.

West starts 1-0-0 while the Rockets are 0-1-0.

BELLEVILLE ALTHOFF CATHOLIC 3, BREESE CENTRAL 0: Morgan Massie's hat trick was all Althoff needed in their season-opening win over Central at George Marz Field.

Zoey Massingale made two saves for the Crusaders, sharing the clean sheet with Vera Neville, who made one save.

Althoff starts 1-0-0, while the Cougars begin 0-1-0.
