The proposal stems from a request by a local golf course, which said the earlier start time would allow it to book both an 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tee off time for tournaments on Sundays.

If approved, the change would apply to all existing liquor license holders in the city. The proposal notes that restaurants serving breakfast or brunch on Sundays could also start service an hour earlier.

An audit of liquor service hours in surrounding municipalities found Alton’s current Sunday hours differ from nearby communities. East Alton, Edwardsville, Granite City and Maryville begin liquor sales at 6 a.m. Godfrey begins sales at 7 a.m., and Grafton starts at 8 a.m.
