MADISON COUNTY - The Madison County Sheriff’s Office warned the public about a fraudulent email scam involving purported payments tied to a Sheriff’s Sale, saying it has received “several reports” of emails claiming to be from Roup and the Sheriff’s Office.

In an alert issued by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, officials said the emails request payment related to a Sheriff’s Sale and “are not legitimate.” The office did not provide a date, location details beyond Madison County, or the number of reports received.

“Roup will never send or request payment from public bidders by email,” the alert said. “The Sheriff’s Office will never ask public bidders to send payment through email instructions.”

The Sheriff’s Office advised anyone who receives an email asking for payment that appears to be from Roup not to send payment and not to click any links.

“If you have questions, please contact the Sheriff’s Office,” the alert said. The office also said people “actively bidding on a Madison County property” with questions can call its non-emergency line at (618) 692-6087.
