SUPER-SECTIONAL GAMES --- STATE QUARTERFINALS/ELITE EIGHT
CLASS 4A
The remarkable run of Belleville East continued on Monday, as the Lancers defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 54-47 to win the Illinois Wesleyan University super-sectional in Bloomington.
East trailed at the end of the first quarter 13-8, but fought back to take a 31-24 lead at halftime, expanded it to 43-34, with the Vikings outscoring the Lancers in the final period 12-10, but East holding the 54-47 win to advance.
The Lancers are now 29-5, and will play LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy, who took the LaGrange Lyons Township super-sectional over Aurora Waubonsie Valley 54-42. on Friday afternoon at 2:30 at CEFCU Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. The winner plays for the state championship Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. against the winner of Wilmette Loyola Academy Catholic and Rolling Meadows. The semifinal losers play for third place Friday night at 8:15 p.m.
Homewood-Flossmoor's season concludes at 24-10.
CLASS 2A
In the Class 2A super-sectional game at Benton, Breese Central advanced to the state finals with a 46-33 win over Teutopolis.
The Cougars are now 30-3, and will play in the state semifinals against Pleasant Plains, who won their own super-sectional over Downs Tri-Valley 54-37, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Illinois State University's CEFCU Arena in Bloomington-Normal. The winner goes to the final Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m., against the winner of the semifinal Elgin St. Edward Catholic and Byron, while the two losers playoff for third and fourth place Thursday evening at 8:15 p.m.
The Wooden Shoes end their season at 27-7.
