A box alarm was requested, bringing assistance from Wood River Fire Department and the Glen Carbon Fire Protection District. Crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control while using minimal water, limiting additional damage to the structure.

“It appears the fire started on one side of the duplex while the tenant was asleep,” said Robert Morgan, deputy chief of the Edwardsville Fire Department. “The tenant on the other side heard the smoke alarm and woke the other tenant up.”

Officials said a chair was destroyed in the fire. The tenant reportedly burned his hands while attempting to move the burning chair to the porch. He later drove himself to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
