The Kahoks, who Matthews said have won three of their last four games, continued to lean on defense but struggled to execute offensively in the loss.

“We have won three of our last four,” Matthews said, “so, we’ve been playing a lot better, we’re continuing to play hard, we’re continuing to guard people. We’ve just got to execute better on the offensive end.”

Matthews credited both teams’ defensive play for making the game feel disjointed.

“I thought we did a great job of guarding them, and they bothered us on the offensive end as well,” he said.

With the postseason approaching, Matthews said the focus is on steady improvement.

“We’re just trying to be better today than we were yesterday,” Matthews said. “And we’re going to continue to try to improve on that, and we’re going to try to have a really good practice tomorrow.”

Matthews also pointed to the reset that comes with postseason play.

“In the postseason, everyone’s 0-0,” he said. “I know my guys are going to compete and give it all we’ve got. So, as I said, we’re going to show up at practice and try to get better.”

Collinsville is now 10-15 and hosts Belleville West on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Kahoks then play at Belleville East on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and host Cahokia next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
