WOOD RIVER - In the second game of the Mike Fahnestock State Farm Shootout, the Marquette Explorers defeated the Duchesne Pioneers 53-39 on Saturday.

Marquette jumped out to a 15-8 lead over Duchesne at the end of the first quarter. The Explorers extended their advantage in the second quarter and led 29-19 at halftime, although Duchesne’s Zack Goodman hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 10.
In the third quarter, Marquette continued to pull away, extending the lead to 47-30. Cameron Jones capped the period with an easy bucket at the buzzer to close out the quarter.
Duchesne outscored Marquette 9-6 in the final quarter, but the Explorers maintained control to secure the 53-39 win.
“We have gotten a lot better on defense this year,” Marquette coach Steve Medford said. “I just told our boys we want to be well prepared for the regionals, but also want them to reflect on the season.”
Marquette was led by Chase Jones with 20 points and Nolan Robinson with 12 points.
Duchesne was led by Drew Heischmidt with 20 points and Zack Goodman with 14 points.
Chase Jones of Marquette was the mvp of the game.
