Connie R. Wells, 36, of Granite City, was charged on Jan. 20, 2026 with two counts of aggravated battery (both Class 3 felonies) and one count each of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon (a Class 4 felony) and aggravated assault (a Class A misdemeanor).

Wells allegedly pointed a handgun while making threatening statements towards a 17-year-old victim before striking them in the face with the weapon on Dec. 27, 2025. She is also accused of striking an adult victim in the head with the same weapon on the same date.

According to charging documents, the weapon was uncased, loaded, and immediately accessible at the time of the offense. It was unlawful for Wells to possess the weapon due to her lack of a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card or Concealed Carry License (CCL).

The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to keep Wells detained in this case, stating she approached both victims while armed before escalating the situation further.

“Victims reported that they were involved in a confrontation when defendant approached, armed with a firearm and struck both victims with the firearm,” the petition states. “One victim reported being struck in the head and sought medical attention at an emergency room while the other, a juvenile, provided photographs of an injured lip.”

Wells was later located by authorities and reportedly “admitted to striking one of the victims, but denied that she was armed.” The petition notes that at the time of this latest offense, Wells was out on conditions of release and bond in other prior battery cases.

The Granite City Police Department presented the latest case against Wells, who was ordered to be remanded to jail for her initial court appearance in this case.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
